Maybe I'm stupid but that final version sounds different from what I heard before and is IMHO absolutely fine. The voice has a good effect on it. Ok, our ancestors would have given the main part a bit more room for dynamic for every single instrument but that just reflects your style. A song with a real message. Great work.

Hello and have a nice Sunday,
Thank you for visiting again and continuing to listen. No, you're not crazy. This final master version was only uploaded on 02/14/24.
That's why I would like to apologize to you and the others. To explain: We occasionally upload "unfinished" versions of a song. We would like to hear opinions about what and, above all, how songs can be improved or what should be changed. We do this less because of our own work but more importantly because others who read this might also get some tips from it for their handling of mixing, mastering or even composing. And if you read your and some other posts as well as our answers here, then I think other musicians can really get a lot of good tips here. It's a contribution to the community, so to speak.

    Thanks again!!!!!!

    Kind regards, Manuela

Thank you for your compliment. I think 110 would be the right choice for men, or my private number. I'll come with a sharp MP. But be careful, I don't discriminate between men who argue *lol.
But seriously now. Unfortunately, there are many women who are subjected to violence. In the way it is portrayed in the song. Most women are massively oppressed. These women need quick, anonymous help and advice.

The heavy part with the drums plus the cillout ballad-like style in the very beginning reminds me of a unique mix of Hammock and Echosmith.

Excellent sound! One question, was there a particular reason why you guys chose to add the phaser effect on the voice?

    Anywho, great stuff as always

Hello Z, thank you for your great praise. Unfortunately, Hammock and Echosmith don't mean anything to me at the moment. But I'll definitely be Googling it in the next few days.
To your question. The effect is a Nectar4Voice effect. A software effect that reacts so quickly that it can also be used live. The task was to use the voice to build a bridge from the quieter opening part to the main part. Since my voice isn't voluminous enough for such things, we did a little trick. We didn't grind the effect into a chain with the singing, as is generally the case, but doubled my voice. The main channel remained absolutely free of effects, i.e. dry. The doubling was given an extra track that was sanded through the effect, with the dry portion then being removed and only the effect remaining on the track. This had the advantage that you could distribute the effect in the room regardless of the voice. I hope I made myself understandable? I think this was a successful move.
    All love and good

Hi Manuela, unfortunately I have to agree with Eric. There is still some distortion on the stereo master. He did a good explanation how this could may happen. However using and mixing so many channels is not easy and takes alot of experience. Maybe try not to use digital EQ's in the DAW. Most of them do not sound right for analog instruments. Cheers und viele Gre, Oli

    Reply by 2Sisters

    Hello Oli,
thank you for your further explanation! You do not have to apologize. As I've said so many times, this isn't about "fishing for compliments" but rather about getting honest opinions. Of course, every artist thrives on applause, so praise is also welcome *smile.
What Eric meant is part of the basic knowledge of every sound engineer and is of course also applied in the studio we work with. I just couldn't relate to the term Eric used. (see also the description of the mix settings in the previous post).
So apparently the "distortion" you both mentioned is an effect we used and intended and not a mixing error. Anything else would surprise me too, as the song is also being criticized on other platforms. There, excessive distortion is not discussed. However, these platforms are platforms on which we work less with loops and more with live recorded music.
I therefore put forward the thesis that human judgment is based more on subjectivity than objectivity. Or to put it another way, our musical ears are very much oriented towards what they are used to and therefore other things (e.g. music from other musical genres) often sound different and therefore wrong.
I don't mean that in a negative way at all, but rather it also reflects our creative versatility.
What really surprises me, however, is the fact that there is actually a mistake at the end of the song that we know about and that is still being fixed, but that no one here has noticed yet. A noise has crept in there.
    Thanks again for the contributions
    Kind regards, Manuela

Mind the compressor and compression. Sorry just talking as a producer, not as a listener :-) The music itself does have a good vibe. So good to listen to real musicians in a real band. Please keep up the good work, Cheers...

    2Sisters
    Reply by 2Sisters

    Hello and good morning,
you don't need to apologize for listening to the song with the producer's ear *smile. First of all, I would like to thank you for expressing your opinion. But I would also like to ask you to specify your view. Do you mean "too much compression", do you mean the "compression on the master", do you mean the "compression on voices or instruments".....?
I would be happy if you commented on this again because I think that a discussion about the world of mixing and mastering would help many others here too.
Now some technical explanations about our song:
A certain amount of "distortion", with the exception of the keys, is definitely what we wanted and probably has more to do with taste than technical mixing errors. The "fader zero" is "-12db" for almost all channels. This means that there is a sufficient header area (distance between signal and noise strength. I think this is what Eric called "gain staging". Is that correct Eric? ). The mix consists of 41 tracks, including 12 drum tracks and 19 vocal tracks (plus pure wet effect tracks for the vocals. That's 4 additional effect tracks in the lead vocals). All tracks are individually adjusted in volume. The maximum level is "-6db ". All tracks are grouped into logical groups (vocals, drums, bass, guitars, etc.). All instrument groups except the bass and drum group are bundled into a group called "Instru". The "Bass and Drums" group and the "Instru" group are mixed and bundled into the "Band" group. All vocals are mixed and bundled into the "Vocals" group. As a final step, the two "Band" and "Vocals" groups are mixed and transferred to the master. The finishing touches then take place on the master.
So much for an explanation of the mix and master. By the way, recording, mixing and mastering don't happen in home recording but in the studio.
The recording takes place in the Livecaracter. i.e. For the most part, the instruments are not recorded individually but in the bandcaracter. This happens in individual cabins, but at the same time. Individual tracks, such as B. singing or here also synt tracks were recorded later.
    Kind regards, Manuela

Hi Manuela, thanks for inviting me back for a follow-up to explain my earlier remark and your question. Based on your remarks to me, I might have been in error about filters, but the fact remains there is still a distortion like sound on your final mix/master.

I suspect you pushed your outputs far too high, Manuela. The visual WAV representation, I believe, confirms my hypothesis. What is happening is the upper frequencies of your song are getting crushed because the transients from the other part of your song are competing for the limited upper space due to your high output mixing channels.

As a result, a hazy distortion effect lives in the upper part of your song, for the entire song. This is real talk, Manuela, and not criticism. A tuned ear will notice the noise. Much like you and everyone else here, the goal here is to entertain folks, while getting better. What I am suggesting is a minor tweak to improve the overall sound quality of your song.

Have you ever heard of gain staging? It is an approach one would take before a compressor or limiter is introduced into your song. The fact is, songs get louder as you mix them. Gain staging, in my opinion, addresses part of this problem. The goal is to have a full sounding song that does not rely on pushing the mixing gain sliders too high. Because in the end, your music followers will end up with a loud sounding song of yours, even at lowered volume levels by follower/listener.

So in summary, this is real talk, the transients of some of your mix buses are taking a beating due to loud channel bus mix settings. The end result? It is creating hard to listen to noise in the upper frequencies that sounds like distortion, which your visual WAV form confirms that, in my opinion.

Manuela, thank you for inviting me back to explain my earlier review. If the song is fine with you, then its fine with me. In this, real talk, I am simply pointing out things you might want to consider, in order to elevate your song to the next level. Manuela, we are all striving to get to that recording label sound, next level. All in all, you and your team compliment this site with your amazing songs and dedication to playing instruments, singing, creating music, and producing great songs. Well Done!

    Hello Eric,
First of all, I would like to thank you for this detailed explanation. Now I know what you mean too. I don't see what you write as criticism but as real help! Thanks for that!
Personally, I have not heard of this particular process with that name. You can see that even after so many years in the music industry, there is still new things to learn. And that's just as well.
But I'm also not the one responsible for mix and master. Therefore, provided you agree, I will forward your contribution to our studio.
But I would also like to say that in this song a slight gray noise (you can also call it distortion) was definitely desirable to emphasize the metallic character of the song. Maybe we overdid it a bit here.
I will discuss this again with my fellow musicians before we make the final master.
Thank you once again for your contribution, which will certainly provide inspiration not only to me but also to the many others who read it here.
    Kind regards, Manuela

Hello my friend, thank you for your great compliments! You're right, the deeper voice below mine is produced by a kind of octaver. This effect part is able to produce multiple voices in different pitches almost without any delay. We even use it live from time to time. Always where my voice seems too thin. By the way, that was also done very tenderly in Wasted Years. But all the other voices you hear in this song are sung. And there's still a little work to be done with the backing vocals. Not everything fits there yet. But we will sing some of it again in the next studio days. But first it's time for some live stories.
    Kind regards, Manuela
