Great track, Joe. I somehow missed this one. Loved the way you started out with strings doing the arpeggiated backing chords. Then it really got funky.

I assumed that you played the harmonic live, but I didn't see that you actually do play harp in your profile. So, if that was a VST, I'm even more impressed by the performance. Nice drums as well.

This is one of my favourites as well. I remember when it was released by the Animals. But, it actually is much older song I believe. I remember discussing it with my dentist when I was a teenager, who informed me that it is actually about a brothel. Back then I paid no attention to lyrics, so was very surprised to hear this. :)

And it baffles me tremendously Eric why you perform in Trance. Nothing wrong with Trance man. I do a little Trance on the side once in a while. But you appear to me as a person with refined music tastes. I did the Harmonic with Chris Hein's Harmonica VST. It was the closest harmonica sound I could find that had enough realism that I was looking. I used Toontrack Superior. It has a lot of tweakable options. It was fun doing this one bro. When I do songs like this I really show my age too much. I was much alive back then. It came out in 1964. Not sure about the brothel part as this song was loosely based on a folksy blues song of the 1920s and 30s. Hey, thanks for stopping by for the review there Eric!

    Cheers!

Wow Joe, this is high quality. I don't know how I missed this one but it is a great cover. I also didn't know you played the harmonica. Yeah, this is a great production my friend. Drums are solid! Bass guitar has a great tone to it.

Many artist have done cover songs of this classic, so good to hear your modern interpretation of this one. I remember this as a kid and wondering about this house in the song and it's sorted history, kinda creeped me out back then, ha!

Soulful version, i like the drums especially. Nice mix too, clean and all the instruments sound like they have their own place in the mix.

Hope all is well back home with the fam, Take care Joe!

In Beantown, we are world champions BABY!!! Hey there young man, I can say that because I think I got you beat by about year Wayne, ah ha ha! :-) Well, we had snow recently, so bring on the winter man! I'm tough!

Hey, thanks for the review Wayne, it always a pleasure to hear from you. Well, when you do a song like this you got to get things right. It took me about 3 months to get this one done. The bulk of my time, about two-thirds of it, was spent on mastering. I decided to just spend more time with my tracks these days and to slow this dog and pony show down a tad, bus by bus, bit by bit, all the way to tweaking and shaping my hi-hats with a bit of color. It got crazy Wayne, I almost scrapped the whole thing because I had too many concurrent tasks going on all at once that I nearly lost focus for a time at what I was doing. Fortunately, I was able to call on Mr. Funktastic to settle me down. So I went into WWJFD mode (What Would Joe Funk Do.)

So the whole thing got interesting when I decided to tackle the separation of frequencies in each of the multi-track bus layers on my console. I relied mostly on Low and High pass filters to carve out and also isolate some frequencies, and gentle compression which is why the mastering got kind of crazy.

Funny you say soulful in a good way. I was not even leaning to any particular sound or doing anything on purpose to shape the genre. But I guess you are right, kind of on the soulful side and I seriously did not even notice that until you mentioned that, thanks Wayne.

All is good here, but as much as I love music, I love my family in more ways impossible to measure. But I somehow managed to find the happy medium or is it median, I always mess that one up. Bosox all the way!

    Cheers Wayne!

I like your take on this song. House of the Rising Sun is a very influential song for me, and I'm sure for many on this site. I'm curious, what instrument would you call this lead? I can't place it

    JoeFunktastic
    Reply by JoeFunktastic

Thanks Rygel. Well, you know the Harp(harmonica) comes in many types like a horn or drum does. The real small ones have 10 holes and the larger ones have 16 holes for a richer sound like the ones Stevie Wonder uses. The one heard in the lead here is 10 hole one which has a higher pitch and not that full sound like Stevie. Thanks again!

That's a different take on it Joe. I expected it to be a bit more funked up, but yeah this is really cool too. I hate to admit that this is probably one of my least favorite classics, mainly due to some bad memories associated with it. But I can certainly acknowledge the work you put into it. Doing a good cover is not so easy to pull off, especially when making it distinctly different from the original. As always, you nailed a pretty sweet version. A very creative and well produced track.

    Hey Neo,

Nice to hear from you man! You know I thought about funking thinks up and then I said no way. This one was hard and if I blow it then things might not go to well for me. So I went with a direction on how I felt at the time rather than trying to force the funk which is never a good idea. This one has been performed by so many artists in different genres that many of those versions sound quite different. But I would never do a cover if I unsure of myself. All the same, thanks my musical brother for the heartfelt comments. I got tons of respect for you do as well. Thanks!

    Cheers from Joe!

Hey Joe...really great cover man! grew up with this song and like many other aspiring kids it was the first song I learnt to play (badly) on guitar...The strings are great and along with the piano faithfully impart the journey this song represents, it's contemporary with it's own (I mean your) style and yet it takes me back on a time trip to my youth, there's memories in these notes to anyone from my generation and you transitioned from past to future like stepping off the curb, cool production and great drums also, especially the ending, salute to you! cheers Dave

G'day mate! Really nice to hear from you Dave! Hey Dave, I want to share something with you. When I first arrived here I was a hip-hop artist and it was one of the worst decisions I ever made in music. Hip-Hop and now Trap music seems to be the default genre most new young people fall into. For me, as I said I fell into hip-hop too at that time, but about year into my account back then I met AllenV and I learned from him the value of being yourself musically through direct contact with him. He never sold out and was true to himself. I liked what I saw and heard from him. You talk about teaching this old dog (me), a new trick!

I deleted all of my hip-hop songs back then and said I am Funky, musically of course. That's who I am and I have stayed the course ever since. But more recently I started having flashbacks on some of the other songs my parents played around me musically when I was a kid. I soon discovered that songs like this one here are as much as a part of my life as funk is. Quite honestly this one made me feel good about myself. Doing todays popular music now appeals far less to me now. Isnt music supposed to make you feel good? Why give a damn about SC followers, make whats in your heart, I am sure there people who feel the same. So even if only one person enjoys my songs, I would say to myself, GREAT! Because now I am being true to myself. You would never see me posting in that SoundCloud rat race chasing follers instead of focusing on what really matters, and that is making great music.

Okay, enough about me rambling on about whatever. It's people like you Dave that make this site great by your devotion, contribution, support, excellent humour, talent, and awesome music. You are great human citizen and musician that shares with us, keep up the great work there mate! Thanks for stopping by.

    Cheers from Joe!

Cheers there mate! Always pleasure to hear from good people I truly respect. This one fun SP. I truly appreciate comments coming from talented people such as yourself. Well SP, all the instruments are mine. I used tabs on most of it and poured a ton of mastering into it my friend. Sometimes I dream about those days and I think I would of been happier as an adult in my prime in those days. The music was way better back them to me. But I must say there is lots of new talent today trying to heard as well. You got some excellent and talented people with you, congrats again mate!

On my song I used a lot of Kontakt based instruments, and tweaked them to perfection which is really cool to do. I am freeing myself from presets my friend and using my ear more. Always good to here from friends on the other side of the pond!

Description : Real guitars and basses played by me. A short, yet tasty bit of MIDI piano and cello with about 7 programmed drum kits and a few drum loops. It's really a metric shit-ton of layered guitars and different textures. This track, sadly, is also a "Goodbye" to my little Acoustic 3/4 Fender Squier. I've been serving as a pawn-shop for my sister-in-law for about 4 years. Not a guitar you'd seek out, but it's been a friend and has been in most of my tracks. The bright side is, I will be replacing it with something better, and full sized. Acoustic guitar suggestions are as welcome as track comments!
