Description : A little something from the archives for Phatkatz's Halloween challenge. A long, long time ago I posted some stems on Looperman and held a contest to see who could do the best remix. This is the winner, and it showcases the monstrous musical skills of Bilbozo with an appearance by his wife as well. It's a whole lot of metal madness and a really fun listen. I'll leave it up for a bit and then put it back in mothballs after Halloween. Enjoy!!

I just stumbled across this thread tonight. Wow, what a blast from the past, well recent past anyways. That was a super fun contest. Sorry I have been away for so long. Work and family are consuming time, but I still play lots of live gigs in a Santana-style group called La Familia. Aching to get back in the studio and produce some fun tracks though. So many faces I know so well in here over so many years. It's so good to see you still here Bear. Thanks you Bear and all for the kind words. I hope to get the time to do a bunch of collabs to inspire on...a guy needs a sanity vice right? Cheers and take care !

I am not usually hugely into metal, but this one is well crafted and musical that I can't help but enjoy it throughout! I loved the disturbing vocal parts, and they shift the whole image of what this would be without them, at least to my ears. Both lead and rhythm guitars are really cool sounding and well played, but I would expect no less when you two got together on a song! I actually don't mind the delayed drums on this style of a song, and think it lends to nice live metal feeling, as if it were in an arena or something. There is really nothing to dislike about this one, and it was super fun to listen to! Fave!

What a beautiful comment from a beautiful lady. Thank you so much. Bill is a wonderful guitar, and that lovely vocal work is Bill's wife. I agree that it would have been better to have boosted her vocals a bit in the mix. As always, your kindness is greatly appreciated. I hope all is well.

    hello Bear

this is very fine composition, so good arranged and performed - the quality is noticable right from the beginning. I liked the guitar tone and the playing especially from 2:15 a lot. Also the vocal is beautiful. Was the distortion on it intentional? It makes no difference regarding to the actual genre anyway.

It is loud as hell so I had to drastically reduce the volume to protect my ears when listening on headphones haha. I am not a fan of metal of course but I am impressed by this one.
Congrats to all performers! Thanks for posting this.

    Best to you, Alex

    Reply by ShortBusMusic

Hey Alex, it is great to have you drop by for a listen. Bill did all of the mixing and the final arranging so I'm not sure if the distortion was intentional. Knowing Bill and his attention to detail I would say it was. On behalf of Bill and his talented wife, our thanks for your very kind words. I hope all is well.

    Hi Bear,
I hope everything is fine for you and your family.
I am so glad that I managed to hear this song.
As usual, the sum of two great talents results in a "real masterpiece". And very good work from Bilbozo's wife as well: these vocals add a touch of "halloweenish" feeling.
As already pointed out by our friends MrNomad, there are a couple of little "imperfections" but this remains a very enjoyable metal track.
    Ciao, Domenico

    Reply by ShortBusMusic

Hi Domenico, thanks so much for the kind feedback. Bill is a huge talent and his wife sings really well, so with their abilities this one was sure to be good. It's always great to have you drop by for a listen and to hear your comments. I hope all is well.

    Hi Bear!

Didn't know that Bilbozo did some excellent metal...Only knew some rock pieces from him...
This is outstanding skill on that lead guitar...did he run any career in music business or just stayed on the 'genious amateur' side? Do you know?
Agreed with colleague Static about the drums...for me specially the snare is too much...
    And the end...too abrupted...

Though, it could be only in my dreams to make quality music like this...every guitar lines are outstanding and pro...

Thanx for letting us know this musical pearl...hope everything is fine around you...

    Handshake, Danke

    Reply by ShortBusMusic

Hey Danke, good to have you drop by. Bill certainly is one of the best guitar players I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He did quite a bit of session work, and played a lot of live gigs as well. I think he probably does less of that now, especially since his daughter is getting older, but I do think he's a guy who will always enjoy playing live. He's definitely a pro. Drums are definitely an issue with this one, but we did it so long ago that changing it now is probably impossible. As always you feedback is greatly appreciated. I hope all is well Danke.

  13. StaticNomad
StaticNomad on Thu 29th Oct 2015 - 3 years ago

Well this is some obvious badassery right here.

I wish I could play guitar this well. 0:17 that chugging riffage is damn rapid.

Gotta say that something feels wrong with drums. They seem to have some delay on them and are very wide in the mix, which gives an odd feel at times. Might even be dragging the groove down a bit. Sometimes the spacious delay feels good, sometimes not. Is this making sense?

There's also quite a bit of creative percussive work.

Anyway: 0:48 quite strange, ethereal vocals that are pretty cool. They appear to be in a language that isn't English.

3:22 cool explosive cymbal. Probably another sound behind it, for added punch.

Not all the lead widdling work is my kind of thing but it's definitely proper guitar hero kind of stuff.

4:37 a slower, more emotional type of soloing that I prefer.

Overall: cool, very accomplished stuff though shame about the fadeout ending, which is just a rudimentary turning down of the volume control. And the end also seems to be abruptly chopped off.

Congrats to Bilbozo and his wife!

    Reply by ShortBusMusic

Hey Static, thanks so much for dropping by and for your candor. The chugging riffage is me on my Ibanez RG (great guitar for metal). All of the lead work is by Bill. I know what you mean about the drums. If my poor memory serves me correctly, the stems I provided had quite a bit of delay on them and I was unable to get them without the fx, so that was something hard to overcome. As for the ending, I think Bill was probably tired of the whole project by then, haha

Can`t imagine anyone beating this mix version Bear...Bilbozos is a mighty big talent & sounds like the good wife is too...If all metal was this good I would be a more regular listener...as it is I tend to pick my few favs...this is one super mix...and with Bear providing the compositional ingredients I wouldn`t expect otherwise...now I finally found a metal song I can fav...yeah...Good to see you back around the place my friend...you have been in my thoughts more often than you would know....always wish you the beat and hope you always find some time for the music...Ed

Hey hey Bear, very good to see you back on the map. I just know that anytime you upload something new on here will never let me down. This is no short of brilliant, a magnificent ride all the way through. Have you heard from Bill at all? Miss him being on here, he is def a force to reckon, superb guitar player and producer. As always, remarkable job brother, I hope to hear more from you soon. Hit me up for collab sometime, I don't sing because of my illness, but I'm still producing music. Take care!

    Reply by ShortBusMusic

Hey Pete, great to have you stop by. I'm sorry to hear about your vocal issues, damn man, that is a tragedy. It's good you can still do all of the other musical things, but just a shame you can't sing any more. I haven't heard from Bill in about a year, but I assume all is good and that he is just enjoying his wife and daughter. He is such a great musician/producer/arranger and an even better person. I thought the community might enjoy a bit of his work. It's great to have you stop by. I'll head over and see what you've been up to. I hope all is well Pete.

Description : "Remember the Sabbath day".

I went to see Sabbath for the last time the other night here in Dallas. They have proclaimed themselves a Dead Band Walking and are performing their final concert tour. They put on a great show as always but it was a sad ending, as most endings usually are. Since they are one of my favorite bands I decided to put together a little tribute track here. I have been busy working on some doom/stoner metal riffs and also have a lot of Sabbath cover stuff I've done. So I did a little mix of something new along with my version of Supernaut. It's basically a jam that focuses on replicating their sound and styling. I know there's a few Black Sabbath fans here so hopefully you guys will like it.

Long live the GOAT, the greatest of all time, the true Gods of Metal - Black Sabbath !

Description : A collab with nicetones101 ! This has been awhile in the making, real life caught up with me and i had to take a little musical break. I looked over my past comments i received and i tried to put all the constructive criticism to work ! I turned the vocals up a bit , I also cut down on the effects and left a clean vocal track. I did want the chaos and the noise to still be a player in certain parts though. I tried to create two distinct atmospheres, an uneasy calm and a manic episode. I prefer headphones with this track as there is a lot going on at certain times.

Description : A collab with nicetones101. Dark , gritty and with questionable intent. crunchy riff driven guitars and atmospheric vocals weave together a solemn track.Hopefully we invoke some sort of emotion! \m/

Description : The music for this song is 'Heavy Metal Highway' song and was used with permission from Randy at . The added vocals and effects were added in Garageband. Listen to it LOUD and listen all the way to the end, it's worth it!

Description : A collab with fellow Looperman, "dssdsdsd". He posted a pretty wicked guitar instrumental a while back of this song from KoRns Untouchables LP with a request for someone to mix it. I decided to give it a shot to complete the song. Wanted to stay true to the original as possible but didn't want a carbon copy so I tried a few ideas of my own. Added a bit of my own guitar, drums, keyboards, a lot of effects and even stepped up to the mic for a try at the vocals.

Other beauty and ambience from filter swept violins, two synth pads and some subtle female vocal samples. Also bass guitar and sub bass. Two programmed, heavy drum kits and one lighter one, to fatten up the sound.

Description : One of my greatest heavy tracks. What I find unusual is the amount of melodic and deep ambient guitar that sits on top of low, distorted riffs and fat, heavy drums. Very little synth work here apart from the sub bass, which plays almost throughout. Bass guitar in two sections and a couple of slide resonator guitar solos. Drums are a few programmed metal/rock kits, no drum loops. What I still have trouble believing and understanding is that all of the many vocal sounds in this are actually timestretched guitar parts (8x or 800% slower). I don't know why the timestretching adds such a clear vocal component to the sound. Gets darker and more intense in the middle (and towards the end) but this is otherwise quite melodic - perhaps in a way that might put off some metallers. Shitloads of guitar playing, some fairly badass, and lots of heavy, crashing drums so press play if you want to rock hard but also in a deep ambient, psychedelic way. Interesting thoughts and reflections are, as always, greatly appreciated. Detailed comments preferred...

Description : I am totally just gonna encourage you to hit play...and enjoy!

Thank you so much Mr. Bear for the track and the mix :-), now you'll have something to entertain you on your trip :-)

Description : I discovered Meshuggah around 2003 and was blown away by the power, complexity and super Heavy sound of their music. Their "Nothing" album marked the switch to 8 string guitars and pushed Heavy Metal into a whole new territory. My track is a variant cover of their song "Nebulous". I have stayed pretty close to the original but added a few dynamic elements of my own. Its loud, its super heavy and way out there...Beyond Nebulous.

Description : This unconventional metal track is dedicated to Valvedriver https://www.looperman.com/users/profile/841435 though it's not a parody of his fine music or me actively trying to sound like it. I struggled for months with the first few minutes of this track knowing that I must be able to take it somewhere deeper, more psychedelic and powerful. Then I loaded some sampled choir voice instruments, as used in my track Reckful https://www.looperman.com/tracks/detail/160356 and suddenly found myself happily in Valveland - not a place I visit often. Feeling amply Valvedriven and newly inspired, I added the last few minutes fairly easily and very quickly. So: it's a twisting, turning mixture of grunge, menacing ambient, mystical metal and ultra-heavy funk. Instruments: electric guitar+bass, synth basses, female choir voices, one synth pad, some other synths on the nastier side of things and a few programmed heavy acoustic drumkits playing a mixture of triplets and straighter grooves. Interesting thoughts appreciated. Favourite bits? Shit bits? Please listen on good headphones/speakers as there's a lot of heavy bass in this. Now get ready to rock: balls out, hands in the air and with rebellious joy in your heart. Just try not to headbang the hell out of your laptop. Go!
