    Hey Joe!

Of course I wanna Funk, and you certainly make it easy with tracks like this. Your music has always been true to the core with classic blends of heavy grooves, great arrangements and super clean mixes. This track is no exception. I dig the horns in here man and the bass and drums are solid as well but those funky keys are undoubtedly the nucleus to your sound. Sure would be nice with some apropos vocals. I'm curious as to your synth keyboard of choice and also wondering if you ever rocked a Hammond B3 or a Fender Rhodes? Your tracks were among the first that I remember listening to when I first found Looperman many years ago. You have assumed the mantle of the Master of Funk here for sure. Have you ever created a challenge for others here on Looperman to create a Funk track? Maybe its time to spread the Funk, and it would be interesting to see what some of the others could come up with. I don't ever recall seeing one but I tend to stay in my own corner of the Looperman clubhouse most of the time. I'm feeling the need to add a Funk track to my repertoire. I haven't the capability to produce any funk keyboard but I know you have plenty of loops uploaded so I might try my hand at snagging a few and giving a go at my best Ernie Isly or Jimi Hendrix accompaniment (haha). I know you've changed your avatar and user name but to me, you will always be...MrFunktastic !

Hey I commented 2 yrs ago. and the funk is still fresh as day old bread. Bruno Mars seems the closest to re-establishing those funk bands that just delivered night in and night out. We need those huge funk groups getting back together to deliver the funky-news, and taking no Back-funk-talk, and establishing a funk base that will deliver the funk to all the boys and girls who want the funk. This tune makes that happen.. good on yah Joe....make that funk hit em low and high at the same time.

To my surprize I had an oh sh*t moment and said damn this is so cool. So I saved that quickly. I never would have thought of coming up with a reverse delay reverb effect. It was one of those happy goofs that one one does and you say OH YEAH! Thanks for the review!

wow an amazing track! glad you put this into the featured section now. would have never discovered this gem otherwise, since i started becoming active this year after having been a member since january 2014 hehehe.

anyway, VERY clean mix you've got here! for some reason though, the panning of that guitar is too far to the right to my taste. im on headphones though, and no one else seems to have a comment on that. i also feel you did that to help in creating a space for each instrument, so ignore me when i complain of your panning. you're a more knowledgeable producer than me for now hahahaha.

great to have a guy like you digging my stuff. would love to pick your brain apart as i produce your spoken vocals in the coming future haha! =)

by the way... "George Clinton would have more 20 musicians playing something live in his shows back in 70s opposed to watching one guy today push lighted buttons, turning knobs, sliding levers and looking busy with all his toys. There was a time you knew who was on brass, the guy on drums, the one on the keyboard, the guy on bass, and the guy on the acoustic guitar."

personally, i think the lighted shows and all of today's live electronic performers have their upsides and downsides. the upside being the cool visuals and integration of technologies in ways one never could imagine. the downside being the inability, more often than not, to connect with the crowd in the same way a traditional live act can. oh well...

    much respect,
    arhum

Thanks Pete that meant a lot from you. I came to realization Pete that although I can do other genres I kept my profile with Funk. It is one of those true genres, like rock, jazz, blues, country and folk. You should hear some of the the stuff my son calls music. It makes me feel like I was mugged, beaten and whipped, and then tossed out on the side of the road. George Clinton would have more 20 musicians playing something live in his shows back in 70s opposed to watching one guy today push lighted buttons, turning knobs, sliding levers and looking busy with all his toys. There was a time you knew who was on brass, the guy on drums, the one on the keyboard, the guy on bass, and the guy on the acoustic guitar. I miss those days. Well just rambling Pete! But all the same, thanks bro! Joe

Ah, now we're cookin'! I can never go wrong checking out a Funky Joe track. Very crisp, clean, and punchy.

Also, I'm 100% in agreement with your comment on vulgarity in the music of today. It's almost like they have to do it to get accepted. It's also good 'street cred' to get arrested and go to prison! I really think we are living in a Bizarro world. Let's keep funkin' and playing good clean music.

    Cheers,
    Scott

Thanks Scott! Scott I prayed I would not become my parents when it came to music when I got old. These illuminati people have made crap lyrics and music very popular with the kids. I make modern music sometimes and even had some young people asking to work with me. But yes I stayed with the Funk in my profile and I could of went completely Gospel as I have produced a few Gospel songs on other sites. After listening to some of today's music I feel like I was kicked, beaten, robbed and mugged. I like songs like yours that leaves a person the same or better. With you it's always better with your music. Thanks for the review! Truly, Joe

Definitely some jammin funk! You know I'm not the biggest funk nut out there, but I can totally appreciate what you've done here. You definitely seem to have changed how you master, which is cool to hear. I thought the brass parts sounded real nice. Nice one to chill to! Thanks for sharing!

  32. EricMilligan
EricMilligan on Wed 17th Sep 2014 - 5 years ago

Joe: Well, that's how things work I guess. I get uncomfortable with really explicit lyrics, but I really do like songs like "Let's Get it On" by Marvin, or "In the Name of Love" by R. Kelly.

And, to my mind, funk is at its heart a truly erotic genre. But, it's done with style, with the feel and the phrasing of the vocals and the instrumental backing, not with sledge-hammer lyrics!

But, all that probably just dates me. Every generation finds its own voice. At least your kid is in to music and is interested in sharing it with you! That can't be bad. :)

  33. EricMilligan
EricMilligan on Tue 16th Sep 2014 - 5 years ago

Joe: Of course I know funk, but frankly never really learned much about it or actually paid attention to the unique characteristics of the music before. Like a lot of music I connect with, I just got lost in the sound and the groove. But, I really, really liked this track and started to realize how much was there once I listened carefully.

I've just spent some time reading about funk's origins, influences, and evolution. This is complicated genre of music with an amazing history! Complex polyrhythms that need to lock together. A focus on the downbeat, which was a major departure from earlier forms. Limited chord progression, but complex extended (jazz) chords. (at least more complex than I typically use!) Clear connections to sub-saharan african musical traditions. Wow! I had no idea. I feel kind of dumb, actually. Thanks for opening my ears! I will still get lost in the music, but I'll also appreciate the artistry a whole lot more. :)

Eric, today I was hanging out with my son today. We talked, had lunch and went for a ride. I allowed him to plug in his phone into the AUX port so I can trip out to his music. Now when we were young our parents cracked down on us because of our music. And I swore I'd never become my parents when I grew up. But the music today, wow! I heard the word p*ssy and it was not about a cat. B*tch but no female dogs. Hoe but no garden tools and D*ck but no guy named Richard. Nearly crashed a guy while driving. My son calls it good music. Then I see your summary. I am so happy I was born when I was. These kids will never know real music. Thanks for the review. Time to sing, Peace. Joe

Ed! Greatly appreciated! I rolled out all of my songs I did while I was away. I was gone for nearly six months which was about a song every two months. It was a considerably slower process because I was working on that family crisis I told you about. I got in 10 minutes here 20 minutes there and I even read e-books about mastering which helped me sound even better than ever. If you compare my earlier songs you will see that my sound quality went way up. Ed I have been here on Looperman for about 5 years. I did destroy my account completely once before due to frustration about the quality of my work. Now that I got a grip on that all is fine! Thanks for the review and download. You're the best! and thanks! Joe

hi MrFunktastic, very fine funk groove that is grounded and influenced strongly by a classic funk style. Agree with doudei: very stylish track! I am enjoying a lot this one.
I am quite rarely listening to the classic-styled funk like this, most of the funk I know is a 70's/80s jazz-funk-fusion style: Hancock, Davis, McLaughlin, Meola and like... so music somehow let's say incorporating a 'root' funk.
Also am listening to Funk France Radio sometimes...
Thanks for this one - I had really great time listening!
