https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJq9Tr7IgCU If you've never heard of a Cigar box guitar check this out. Over the summer I was invited with another crafter and a couple performers to show our craft at the 3rd Annual Maine Luthier Showcase. A luthier is one who builds or repairs stringed instruments. That was a fun day! Cigar box guitars and roots instruments came about from the desire to make music by people so poor they couldn't afford or in some cases weren't allowed to own instruments. Many of the great blues musicians got their start on these primitive instruments. Mart Tauber and I demonstrated handwound pickup winding as well as showing our homemade guitars. I wind the tradional pole style you'll see in most guitars (I'll make a video to show). Marty demonstrates flat humbuckers, a really popular type in the homemade instrument scene. They're surface mount, so no need to cut into the face/box for mounting. Tradionally cigar box guitars are made with found and scavenged items, not necessecarily a cigar box either. Do you make or play homemade instruments of any type? Please share.
