I made this video in response to seeing the question "How do I get harder hitting or punchy drums". I demonstrate one method of doing this with compression and a transient shaper.

By no means is this the only thing that you need to know. Just another tool to add to your arsenal of knowledge.

Bravo! Over a year ago I address the same issue but took a slightly different approach. I like how you said, "By no means is this the only thing that you need to know." You very correct when you said that.

But what I did differently is I layered two identical instruments and then brought one of them down one octave. Then added in a possible Sub-Bass enhancement module on one of the kick drum layers with a light rattle or distortion module. I would also deploy some parallel image compression, EQ and Post EQ on that bus. Then Compress the Master Bus but not anything too crazy and then perform some spectrum analysis and make the appropriate adjustment like thickening up the bass a bit more with an exciter.

If you are wondering what that might sound like, then take a listen to a loop I made a year ago demonstrating the methods I just spoke of:

I am not an expert by any means but found a very good compressor called molot03. It is freeware and works very well and is easy to use. Furthermore I use FL bassbooster(if needed) to give it more fullness and fatness. Since I use these my drums have improved significantly.
