Hey just wondering if anyone had any insight as to the subgenre of progressive house that these tracks fall into because I want to know what to search to find more like them. I thought I would put it in this part of the forums because it has a lot to do with the arrangement and music theory behind the tracks.
Here are the examples what im talking about
Porter Robinson: Unison

Avicii: Levels

Avicii: Bromance

Avicii: Take it to the Top

Porter Robinson: Language

All these tracks have melodic buildups (often times including vocals) with massive lead synths that come in (usually alone at first) as the buildup ends. Any thoughts or links to more like it?
Hi there. I've been a DJ for many years and worked in many clubs. Since then House music has changed a lot to the point where I couldn't keep up with the subgenres. Here's a basic list, I hope this helps. Peace.
Dance - Club / EuroDance
House - Deep House / Filtered / Disco House / Hard House / Progressive House / Tribal / Vocal House
Trance - Ambient Trance / Goa / Hard Trance / Melodic Trance / Progressive / Psytrance
Then there's tech house, minimal house, funky house, commercial house, detroit house, new york house & probably more that i can't remember.
Just think of any old word and throw in the word "house" after it. You'll be fine with that.
ya,
lots of times DJs or artists will coin a sub-genre...
i dont think you guys understand what i was asking... i wanted to know which of the subgenres of house music the tracks that I linked to could be classified as... i was not asking for a list of all subgenres of house music.

oh well in that case that sounds to me like what i would call commercial house.
Others are bound to disagree because the point i was trying to make is nobody really knows. In the years i worked in the dance music scene what i learned is that one mans techno is another mans trance. One mans disco is another mans house etc.....
Also i once went to this gig in Sheffield where they played this stuff called happy hardcore. Where as here down south everybody calls it rubbish.
lol yea happy hardcore can def be pretty cheesy...
I wouldn't bother with defining sub-genres so much. For instance, the Porter Robinson Unison track starts off as a trance-song and switches into electro and back into trance.
You might find more tracks like this looking for "Fidget House" or "Contemporary Trance". However, it would be more useful to see which label released these tracks and see what else they've put out. Also, finding out who collaborates with the artist you like might give you some pointers.
