Drum and bass is a type of electronic dance music also known
as jungle. This article deals with the history of this
    musical style.
combined ragga vocal tracks with broken beats and bass lines.
By 1994 jungle began to gain mainstream popularity and fans
of the music (known as junglists) became a recognizable part
of British youth subculture. The sound took on a very urban,
raggamuffin sound, incorporating dancehall ragga-style MC chants,
dub basslines, but also increasingly complex, high tempo
rapid fire breakbeat percussion. At this time jungle began
to be associated with criminals and criminal activity and
perhaps as a reaction or perhaps independently of this,
producers began to move away from the ragga style and
create what they labeled drum and bass. There is no
clear point at which jungle became drum and bass,
though most jungle producers continue to produce what they
    call DRUM AND BASS!

    Or we could simply say:

Drum 'n Bass started as a music experiment on the
dance floors of the UK breakbeat hardcore and rave scenes where
DJ's and producer's blended reggae bass lines, hip hop, jazz,
    breakbeats, ambient music and techno.
it began during the late 80s and early 90s as the electronic music,
rave, club and ecstacy cultures blossomed in the UK.

Here are some of the pioneers of drum and bass culture:

    Andy C & Dj Hype
not track the origins of drum and bass music, but it feels old school

    Grooverider 1993
(dark old school drum and bass)

    Micky Finn 1992
in this track you can the best hear the influence of various directions
of music genres on drum and bass

    dj fabio
this track, I took as an example because of the legendary
    beat/break called Amen break

different, slightly heavier sound, because of the metal element,
    maybe a little glitch sound

One of my favorite track, very soft old school jungle track

    Here are some more artists:

    Roni Size
    DJ SS
    Brockie, Kenny Ken,Urban Takeover...

    "Amen break"
We can not talk about the history of drum and bass, no not
to mention the legendary "Amen break"The "Amen break" was a brief drum
solo performed in 1969 by Gregory Cylvester "G. C." Coleman
in the song "Amen, Brother" performed by the 1960s funk and soul
    outfit The Winstons.
It gained fame from the 1980s onwards when four bars (5.2 seconds)
sampled from the drum-solo (or imitations thereof) became very widely
used as sampled drum loops in hip hop, jungle,
breakcore and drum and bass music!
The Amen Break was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music,
and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music

The Winstons inheritance and turned it into a commercial product!

    Light up your ganja!

Can't mention jungle and not include this one. Legendary!

And this is before Freaky Flow even touched it, I think it's already golden! Best Tuuuuuuune I've heard in the Jungle!

Let's get real old school now! If this isn't in your blood, you're not a junglist. Simple.

    Carry on, boys.

i remember the rave scene very well at first we had fantasia with ratpack and many other djs and mc's representing and the dawn of the ragga twins who also hit the rave seen even before jungle came about then there was the birth of jungle mania with people like uk apache, general levy etc making all these phatt tunes jungle is a mutation of the latter slow rave breaks genre plus as rither says the ragga vibe and dubstep bass etc was incorporate'd then through the years the mutation continued jungle got faster as did the amen breaks then all of a sudden a new beat was created a simple kick snare kick snare as i call now a standard beat to which we now call drum and bass which started in london and is now so world wide it is infectious but the only man i would thank for all this music. jean michel jarre i am sure many people know about this man and i feel with out him there would be no drum and bass trance techno etc........drum and bass forever

    @Rollagee Jungle is massive!

I don't know what my sort of drum and bass is, but I'm pretty certain I don't make jungle.

Can anyone help me out? I know most of the sort of songs I make.. but I'm stumped here as to what sub-genre of DNB mine is.

@dv8 we start from the root,man.... deep roots lol!!
seriously we can not talk about drum and bass culture without mentioning the jungle this is fact,
because both are very related to each other!

    drum and bass Sub-Genres:

2-step, is a typically British style of modern electronic
dance music, and a relatively popular subgenre of UK Garage
is that the rhythm lacks the kick drum pattern found in many
other styles of electronic music with a regular four-to-the-floor beat.
A typical 2-step drum pattern features a kick on the first and third beat,
with a shuffled rhythm or the use of triplets applied to
other elements of the percussion, creating a
"lurching, falter-funk feel", and resulting in a beat distinctly
different from that present in other house or techno.

    2step example:

Clownstep or doofstep is a pejorative term used to describe
a particular type of drum and bass music. Typically clown step
has a 'screech' bassline, simple beat structure and/or a large
    amount of swingbeats!
Clownstep refers to happy Drum & Bass with the swing feel
on the hats and/or other forms of percussion. Though this definition
and style are not yet widely in use, it is becoming increasingly
popular with music lovers, not just those who
like D&B. Whether or not this sub-genre can survive commercially
    is yet another matter entirely.

    Clownstep example:
(slightly darker sound,I took this track for example,
because of excellent hats and percussions!)

    Intelligent drum and bass (IDB)

(also known as atmospheric drum and bass, ambient jungle, and artcore),
is the widespread term for the subgenre of drum and bass emphasising
influences from lounge, jazz, and ambient music. The music typically
has a very atmospheric or ambient quality, with washes of synthesised pads,
and deep sub-bass. The Rhodes piano is heavily featured, along with samples
of other jazz fusion instruments like guitar, flute, and vocals!

    Intelligent drum and bass example:

It is usually characterized by basslines that have a filter
shaping LFO on them which gives the bass a ‘wobble’ sound
accompanied by uptempo drum loops!Jump Up is a clean beat not
similar to the popular amen and Apache drum loops.
Jump up is easy to distinguish from other jungle and D'n'B styles
due to its simplicity, with 3-tier basslines (high, mid, low)
that provide the thick and clean basslines so commonly associated with Jump Up,
    and Simple KickXXXSnareXXXXXKickXSnareXXX Pattern
(sometimes referred to as a "step break"). Drum rolls are often
long and composed mostly of kicks and often have some effect
    like flange thrown over them

    Jump-Up example:

    Jungle Jazz

jungle drums mixed with jazz elements, very simple and yet so original
    Listen to this example:

    Liquid funk

Liquid funk (alternatively, Liquid Drum & Bass or Liquid)
is a sub-genre of drum and bass.
While it uses similar basslines and bar layouts to other styles,
it contains fewer bar-oriented samples and more instrumental
    layers (both synthesized and natural),
harmonies, and ambience, producing a calmer atmosphere directed at both home
    listeners and nightclub audiences.

    Liquid funk example:

    more Sub-Genres:
    Drumfunk,Hardcore Jungle,Techstep,Neurofunk and JUNGLE

its probably IDB, i only recently learned that most of the music i listened to was called "intelligent", and weve got pretty similar music tastes from what ive known so far

I will post info about neurofunk, which is my favorite subgenre.

Neurofunk is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that uses dark resampled basslines that have been ran through various effects. This type of bass usually sounds like it is twisting and bending. Automation is key in neurofunk. Also an extensive knowledge of filters, lfos, and effects is required to make what I would like to call a "sick" bassline. And remember automation is key.

The drums on the other hand can vary greatly. I tend to use a standard drum pattern, but some times I like to use a lot of syncopation in my snares and kicks.

    Neurofunk example:

    RogueAi : Fri 23rd Jul 2010 : 11 years ago

Also I forgot to mention that neurofunk generally has long atmospheric/cinematic intros that may use a half-step break.

    StephenPotter : Fri 23rd Jul 2010 : 11 years ago

Yeah, I think you're right cyber, I tend to always use pads similar to that one in my DNB tracks, and the builup is kinda similar to my sort of buildup. Thanks for the help there guys!

I tend to end up focusing more on the drumloop than the bass though, but I'm working on that, and hopefully I should be able to make some more sub-genres of DNB.
