Sup all?
I've just come across some spare money, around $500 not much but enough to day dream, and I wanted to buy something (this is where you all learn what a noob I really am) to further my music hobby. As of right now, I make all tracks on my laptop, which is not state of the art, but good enough for my purposes. I also have a decent enough sound card so I'm not looking for that either. What I want to know is, if you were in my position (which means you had the above hardware ONLY) and you wanted to further your music making, whats the first thing you'd go for? Genre wise, I'm into dubstep and hip hop but that doesnt really matter does it? keep in mind my budget which is not basically enough to go crazy with. Basically, my question is this: If you had a laptop and a decent sound card ONLY, whats the next thing you'd dish out $500 for?

Either recording gear or a cheap synthesizer. Some cheap synths are the Korg MicroKorg and the Alesis Micron(both are somewhere around $399.00-$399.99), there is also the Novation Xiosynth 25 key version(which goes for about $329.99, and the Korg Kaoscillator(which is about $199.99.) Hope that helps. |

why get buy a synth when u can buy a MIDI controller and interface instead. u will still have $100-$250 left over. If u buy an audio interface, u can use the leftover bread to get a decen mic, if u strictly buy a MIDI interface, u will have more mula to spend as u desire, or save 4 later.
There are lots of sights with free VST's so that u can play virtually any instrument with u'r MIDI controller. It's a better way to go then spending $400 on a synth, especially if u don't know whut u'r doing. |

Midi controllers work(although experience has shown me that some VSTi's can drag and would be harder to use live.) The idea behind Synthesizers is to experiment(so no one would know 100% how to use a synth.) Either a synthesizer or a midi controller would work though(and controllers are a lot cheaper a good one can go for between $100-$200.) |

Akai MPD 18 for beats, and as Kevin said and a Korg MicroKorg, that should come to way below $500.Vst plugins are good but can sometimes tax your cpu,and unless your sound card is good latency may be a problem. That's what I would do anyway! |

Even though it is more like $600.00 I have a Roland SH-201 synthesizer and It is one of the best of the lower priced(yes lower priced because most of the great synths run in the $1000.00+ range)synthesizers and I would suggest it but if you have only $500 I think Pere's has a good set up(and if you can afford a Korg Kaoscillator you have a one man band set up.) My set up(as far as the one man band set up goes) is only lacking the Kaoscillator(I have a Roland SH-201 synth, and a Boss DR-550 MK2 drum machine which is also a good drum machine though it is old it is still worth while if you want to spend under $100 the DR550 goes for about $50 if you find one.) |

If you want real analog (mono)synth for under $400 get a DSI Mopho. |

But it doesn't have a keyboard. |

No problem and if I can find any other suggestions I'll let you know. By the way, the DSI Mopho(which goes for $399.99) doesn't have a keyboard but you can alway get a $100.00 Casio keyboard(but it has to have a midi in and out hook up.) |

No problem, maybe sometime we can collaborate on a project and I hope you enjoy what you get. I would be interested in knowing what gear you decide to get as well. As soon as I get some money to go shopping for new gear(the newest gear I have is the drum machine I got in september) I may be on here asking about some gear as well. |
