I know that it kinda sounds like a stupid question. Haha. But to me it sounds the same and i think it would help me out if i had some clarification. |

well hip hop is a culture that consists of many forms of self expression, such as, rapping, breakdancing, graffitti, spoken word, a certain dress code. rap is a form of hip hop. well, thats just my take on it. |

i think this is how best i can say it. hip hop, evolved from rap. and hip hop engulfs all the other genres of music, but still keeps it rappable. here is the deal, in rap, it is simply a ruff sounding kick and a hard baseline and some straight forward melody with some solid flow, but in hip hop, u can hear really cool melodies and classical stuff with some technoish things in them, and before u are aware, some rock drum rolls in them. they even sometimes get u singing on them in the chorus parts, but in rap, strictly hardcore stuff solid flow probably the chorus may also be a flow.
someone correct me if i am wrong on this. |

This is what I dig about the Loop, not so long ago I would have said in ignorance that they were the same...now after hearing a lot of the styles here I can almost say I understand. |

vizun is absolutely right
dext dee youre kinda wrong hip hop did not evolve from rap. rap is an element of hip hop. |
|
 |
HipHop = Rap,R&B,Crunk,Dirty South,...
HipHop is a culture |
|
 |
Vizun is right in what he says _ Rap is the vocal expression and hip hop is the culture. |

I have to say, Trying to say if hip hop came out of rap or if rap came out of hip hop is like which came first the chicken or the egg. They are one entity yet totally different. You can't have one without the other. I suppose the common explanation is hip hop is more intellectual than rap. Hip hop is what comes from the soul, it's telling a story, painting a picture with your words. The beats are more orchestrated and well composed. More undertones of Jazz and blues while Rap tends to be more self absorbed. It's bragging, boasting, it's more Alpha. The beats are more funk driven and militant. Though you will still find Funky hip hop and Jazzy rap. You need both of these though. One feeds off the other. It's what keeps it interesting. Just my take. |

i posted b4 i read what that wiki link had to say...
@ MrE, a healthy argument :D
i quote...
"Their vocal style is similar to that of rappers"...."are considered by some to be the forefathers of rap"
Now the above lines are from the Origins of Hip hop. if u would notice, the word rap was referred to how they sang the songs, and thus, the second like also refers to them being the forefathers of it...
"Creation of the term hip hop is often credited to Keith Cowboy, a rapper with Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. Though Lovebug Starski, Keith Cowboy, and DJ Hollywood used the term when the music was still known as disco rap. It is believed that Cowboy created the term while teasing a friend who had just joined the U.S. Army, by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of marching soldiers. Cowboy later worked the "hip hop" cadence into a part of his stage performance, which was quickly used by other artists such as The Sugarhill Gang in "Rapper's Delight"."
the above also tells us that, the rap was there already until someone (Keith Cowboy) coined the word hiphop and not the word rap, but the first quote talked about the forefathers of that musical style and STILL refers their style to Rap, so what does it mean? where did they get the term rap from in the first place to even know how it sounds like??
i still stand on the case that Hip hop evolved from RAP :)
correct me if i am wrong. HEALTHY GUYS, HEALTHY!!! |

@ dext dee
have you ever seen the highlight of jason williams running down the court(im assuming you watch basketball lol) and faking a behind the back pass where he passes the ball to his teammate of his elbow. they call him white chocolate because he plays like... a black street ball player. i think they call that attitude "swag" these days right. any way that attitude has permeated the ghetto since way before any term was coined.that attitude is hip hop. and while keith cowboy may have coined the term. the style and way of life was already there, out of this style rap was created.healty arguments son , healthy arguments lol |
