# A DIY approach might be fun - check out Blender, it's become a standard apparently.

Anim8or is worth checking into, although it's not nearly as powerful (imho). A Youtube search on both of these will show you what's possible.

And they're both free. No kidding.

# They'll do as much or as little as you want.

I did some Anim8or work a couple of years ago, but realized that there was a simulator that I could "film" in that was easier than animation. This rig is actually to scale, and the physics are spot on both in terms of the rotation (simulated g's) spin and the orbital trajectory. The entire structure was built on Anim8or and the skins made with an ancient copy of Photoshop.

I think with Anim8or, what you're wanting to do could be done in a couple of days including the learning curve involved.

# Blunt_Ted - I was thinking that it might be a good opportunity to both learn some new computer skills, and there's something about doing it yourself that can be really satisfying.

Anim8or is under 1 meg to download. Available here: http://www.anim8or.com/main/index.html

Blender is about 10 megs and available here: http://www.blender.org/

I have trouble keeping up with my own creative work, so this is the best I can offer up at this time. Hopefully you'll get what your looking for!

# a spinning record is pretty simple lee. all you have to do is take the original image and rotate it clock wise save it as an image and then rotate it again. save that as an image. keep going until you have come full circle. you then sequence these images in windows movie maker, magix or whatever software you happen to be using.

# or how about i help out? look if you want something real cool. i can make it for you. just tell me exactly what you want and ill take care of it. the way your going about it make my head hurt. i just cant see you doing all that work for a very simple animation. let me explain

ive tried every 3d app in the biz and have wasted alot of valueable time learning second rate free stuff. my advise is dont waist your time. spend it well. download a copy of max there are free demos that work for 30/ 60 days full copys. thats what you need bro strait up. max 2010 is the latest, but to me not the greatest. the best 3d max workstation is max 2008 or max 8 as its called.

please dont waist your time dude trust me bigtime on that. but if you have know idea about 3d modeling just try it, with a simple free app called CB Model Pro. it very easy to check out. and ituitive (sp?) lol just fun and easy. you can even paint you whole model in there built right in.

youll see right away that it is simple yet fun. and when you are feeling that you have some understand of how 3d works a little and you'd like to animate those little character you made to say, walk, or talk, well then its time to download 3d max 8 or 9. 9 is good to learn it comes with a nice starter kit. youll learn fast if your really interested and, its very addicting. lol

i do suggest you def try to learn cause if you like the idea of making your dreams come true, like visualy this is the way dude. you will love it. but for now i will do this for you to show you some of my work and what can be done. let me know asap detals. need pic references if you have any. if not think of what your trying to see visually and then send me an email and ill hit you up dude.

(note im not doing this for you for free, for this you have to repay the favor. i would say a good payment would be an exclusive accapella from you and all rights to it. just so i can say i got somethin for it. and im a barber and know lots of tattoo artist and we barter all the time. the owe me me than i will ever owe the though since i have no tats. lol its just something tatto artist and barbers do. so ill barter wit ya if you want and wrap this up for you. just let me know.

# Superclutz - good call on 3d Max! I played with the others before checking that one out. I'd say it's a close second to Blender for what it's capable of.

# @ nomad nah man you must be reading to much into blender and people trying to amp it up. blender is not even close to 3d max 2010. dude your comarision is way off. just because it has met some standard req doesnt mean it is anything next to 3d max studio pro.

there is nothing wrong with free ware it just leads you to max eventually and well thats really were you need to be. it has more than 15 years of people from all over the world that fully support its logic.

people go to school just to learn it as a tool in the industry. blender is not considered at all when taking the main computer animation classes where i come from. its never even mentioned. for a reason. its a big big waist of time if your really considering to be anything like pro. not to say it has not grown or cannot do what max can do. it about work flow and overall time spent that you will find that going thru blender to do something is just not what alot of pros really want to do. it is sub par. but as a learning tool into 3d its as good as it get, for free. just dont expect to do anything major with it until you figure out how to model and animate with it first. i had characters walking and talking in 1 day of working with max. albeit i was a 2d animator at the time and knew exactly what i wanted to do. max show me right away how to do thing and how i could improve them. lots of free help online. i have taken over 700 hours of online free courses on youtube google video and jing

its worth the time if you do it. lots of money to be made comercially too if your good and people know your name. its just a really awsome thing. i had tried to learn blender but from what i saw its interface is not familure to anything 3d ( maya max and alot of other 3d tools share a common logic on how things get done in 3d, blender refuses to see this as benificial) so blender is a bad boy and doesnt like to follow simple 3d rules when creating and designing animation. its just it doesnt feel right. when im in max i feel like im at home. and i see how it can do so many things. with blender i look at it and go dammit. wth??? where is the, never mind i hate blender i have to say it. its so dammed impossable to do the most simple task that doing it in max is like a breath of fresh air. its so nice. and help is everwhere. for free or otherwise.just get a feel for what 3d is and dive into max. take the tutorials and then check out blender after your 30 day demo ends. ill bet you youll run away from blender and go out and but 3d max. there are places you can get max for free. as educational downloads. look it up. amost everthing can be considered educational so almost every program can be downloaded free of charge. limwire it. its out there. get max 2008. and max9 or 2009. if you dont have a 64 bit pc, download the 32 bit version.

there is a free copy of max called g max. but it personally sucks. dont waist your time with that please. get max 8 or 9.

# @Superclutz - My only experience with Max was the free version - and honestly I prefer AutoCAD 2005 to what the free version of Max is capable of.

I know several people in the gaming industry who swear by Blender, and I've watched several full on animations created with the program. For freeware - it blows the door off of the free Max version.

That said, I absolutely HATE Blender's interface. Truly. Most of my experience is with Anim8or, but only because of the ease of 3d model creation. I've only used these programs for experimenting with the creation of platforms to be used in orbital applications, and I've found the barriers on every freeware animation/vector graphics program I've played with. For example, based on documents fed me by a disgruntled NASA employee, I've designed and built a low orbit tether-sling platform with cables that are 120 km long. MAX G just crashed whenever I tried to load my creation, and Blender compensated by remapping it at 120 cm. Blender also promptly lost every one of my bitmapped skins.

If I ever do play with more vector graphics, it'll probably be with Anim8or because of its price and because it actually does what I need it to do.

But what's really important is finding a platform that will do what you want with the least amount of hassle.

Cheers.

# thats cool nomad sory about your low orbit tether sling not working in g max. see 1 thing is that g max is not anything like the real max because it majorly downsized and really only made for 1 thing and well 2 thing and two things only. to learn basic modeling, how to use basic materials and basic renders, but really made to let you mod games like quake and duke nukem doom stuff like that. your models had to be converted back then to get them in your game engine of choice and and that app was called milkshape.

the idea was to learn some gaming design as well as a little modeling so the field could be opened up a little more because not to many amercian developers at the time here in americia but alot of people became interest around that time because quake following doom, was leadinng everybody to believe that 3d graphic and videogame were going to be a big part of are lifes in the future. man were they right. silacon vally is ever the hot money sorce. even in these hard times people are still signing million doller deals on thousands of 3d deal and contracts. im about to show what i can do for your logo and maybe even get the one doone for some looper dude i know... lol

lol@ shan. lol soon my friend soon.

2 words.

hell yeuhz!
