hey bro. pro tools is top range but you brain is the best. ableton 8, reason 4 and also fl 9 is good to make beats on. |
|
 |
The best way is to try'em (They casi all have demos on their websites).
The best software is the one you feel most usefull for you.
For example, I tried a lot of soft & Hard wares and finally FL is the one which correspond me better... |

FL is really intuitive but the sample bank leave more to be desired
reason is dope, but you have "wire" all your sounds together, and your sampler is your audio playback, and the bass is tight.
Ableton Live 8 is elastic like Sony Acid, But my problem with sony acid, and any sony product, is the lack of automation.
Automation is fun.
Max/MSP is a huge automation thing...
so are a couple others..
The best for just sitting down, and recording, personally...
pro tools, or Mac's Logic/Garage band
cubase
ableton
audacity
a tape recorder
20,000 dollar recording studio
or a broken hard drives with scattered .wav files lol......
|
|
 |
Ableton is my favorite..
but there is also motu, nuendo, reaper..... what else am i forgetting..
magix
...
Try them all if you can. |

Hi there dude.
Iv tryed pretty much most of them as i was in the same situation as you a few years back.
I started with reason, which was a great little scratch pad for getting down ideas and giving you a good insight as to how things work because reason gives you all you need pretty much right out the box, if you take the time to get to grips with reason (really dig deep and make your own presets, import your own loops and sounds) it can make some stunning stuff, just check out looperman member Travis Huckins for an idea on what you can do.

Frooty loops.... erm..... welll....
ill leave that one because i dont want to start an argument with peeps, lolol.
Sonar is for lack of a better word AMAZING.... it gives you all you need rite out the box, including shed loads of effects, vocal pitch correct plugin (who needs Auto tune eh!?!? lol)it sounds superb, its midi capabilities are top notch and the whole thing only takes a little bit of getting into to reap the rewards. great package..
Cubase is alot like sonar altho i find it a little long in the tooth in the way it goes about things, i believe the reason for this is because it has such a huge user base that steinberg wont make too drastic a change to the software to p!ss them off..
Ableton... this is what i use day in day out, i have settled with Ableton because it was just so easy to pick up and allowes me to dj as well as produce tracks, i dont really like any of the synth's it comes with so i cant really say its the greatest thing since sliced bread, buuuuuuuut.... all i do know is that it allows me to get my ideas down faster and with less hassle then any other software iv ever used...
Logic Pro Studio...
Best software on the market by a long shot.. comes with everything you need including 48gig of sounds and loops. I know you r gonna say that the software is mac only but it really is the best... and anyways there are ways of running it on a pc or a "Hackintosh" as there called ;) |

Whatever is the program, the sample bank must personalized if you wanna get a good touch...
I use in averating 75% of external banks and kits...
For recordings, at WestRoomStudio, we're using Cubase Essential 4... but we gon' switch to Reaper as well we finished current projects...
I will finally say that using only one soft or hardware is not a good idea... mix the wares vibes gonna make pretty cool mixes & open minded your imagination...
Actually I'm mixing an instrumental on Reaper cause in FL the beats & melodies don't compress like I want... |

New to the site (just registered a day or two ago), but thought I'd chime in here. I've been using Mixcraft currently. I'm just getting started, really, in the whole process, and Mixcraft has everything I've been needing so far. Decent midi, access to a downloadable loop library, a couple synths to choose from, and a couple different versions of the standard effects and plugins.
Only thing that I'd want to change about it is to have the ability to open iTunes files in it; my wife and I have been using karaoke versions of songs to make a Christmas CD ... and all the files have to be converted from iTunes to mp3 first. But I doubt any software of this type will open iTunes files. I don't think Apple wants to allow it. ;) |

I use Magix Music Maker 10 Deluxe, Magix Music Maker 11 Deluxe, Audacity 1.3 Beta, Adobe Audition 1.5, Cool Edit '96, Acid Xpress 7.0, Cakewalk Music Creator 2, and Steinberg Cubase LE 1.0.10(all are outdated.) I really don't know about recording(I should be getting a book on it before the 19th), but I have experimented with editing and generating sounds on some of the programs. Magix Music Maker Deluxe is pretty good for editing sound(as wall as being a fairly cheap program.) I know someone who used Cool Edit and he said you could get professional quality vocals with it(it is also freeware now.) Acid Xpress is a very stripped down version of Acid. Audacity is a free download, and I really like messing around with Audition(although I need to figure out how to use it a bit better.) I have no idea how to use Cakewalk Music Creator 2 or much of an idea of how to use Cubase LE(although I have made a bad recording while trying to figure it out.) |

Hi all,
I am working 12 hour night shifts for 35 more days without any nights off....so I haven't been posting much or making anymore music till Dec. Just been overhauling equipment at the power plant. An every 10 year 'must do'.
As far as what software to use, I can only vouch for what I use to make my tunes with. And that is 'Pro Tools'. Expensive, but worth it to Me.
What it really comes down to is this....buy/try any of the better brands of software that are mentioned in this thread, and work with one you ultimately like, to get the most out of it.
So in that respect, it all then comes down to how talented and intuitive you are. Do you understand music and the variety of 'tools' available that come with such packages enough so that you can really make use of all the tools provided? (reverb, compression, limiting, the use of automation for effects, side chaining, etc.)
Otherwise a lot of reading and experimenting is in order before your songs will sound near like what you hear on the radio or CD. Seems like I am reading constantly to keep up with things, as I am a self taught musician. I don't read music and play, so it is was a little more struggle for me in the beginning of making music.
Comparing my first few tunes to my last several ones, there is a marked difference as I learned how to use the software along the way.
Some people have a natural talent and some don't. Those that don't, their 'live music' usually sound stiff and like a robot playing, as they can't somehow 'feel' the music in their soul. Music software will help with that as it can keep time for you and you can edit all your mistakes.
These days, litterly anyone can buy a cheap Casio keyboard and press 1 finger down and make music. Nothing wrong with that really, as those that don't have a natural ear for it, can still have a lot of fun and enjoyment.
Anyways, once you are a master of a particular software package then chances are, you can make that software do anything you want to hear, and it'll be just as good as one that cost twice as much.
So the outcome is really in the hands of the person making it work for them.
Hope this helps,
Randy |

hmn
well
lets take it further
The Fisher Price "Learn Through music is BY FAR the best DAW"
it says what it does and it does what it do lol
I have been messing with all of them... except protools..
I love ableton with reason rewired... sorry that's it for me.
I also at times rewire Reaktor thru ableton... it makes everything.... EPIC.
Try everything basically... the first one you get, and you know how to record on, you should go there.
But further more, FL and ableton have FANS. you know? .. Reason is awesome, I have yet to hear their new recording software, but if you have questions or need help, it's going to be more than likely someone has an answer...
Just to put this into perspective... I couldn't figure out why I couldn't record in Reason, until I e-mailed some hard core users and they gave me the low down and the in's and outs.
Sony Acid
and Nuendo are the two I am the most curious about, but I am happy with Ableton 7 and 8, Reason 4, Reaktor.....
(btw squarepusher, prodigy, aphextwin, telafone tel aviv all use Reaktor) |
